Welcome to Windows XP Networking . This book was written to help you understand and configure Windows XP networking in a variety of environments-;from the home office to larger networks with stringent security requirements. Windows XP has many exciting new features that can be easily integrated into new or existing networks. After you have discovered what those features are and what they do, this book will guide you in the configuration of those features. Who This Book Is For Windows XP Networking is for administrators of small, medium, and large networks who will find this book to be helpful in the planning and implementation of Windows XP networking. The reader is assumed to have some knowledge of TCP/IP, Windows NT domains, and the Active Directory, but the authors have made every effort to ensure that the information that is presented is of value to both newer administrators as well as the more experienced administrator. What's In This Book Windows XP Networking covers a range of topics. The first few chapters in the book introduce local area network protocol configuration, with a special emphasis on TCP/IP configuration, the default Windows XP protocol. Heterogeneous networking, including services for UNIX, are covered in this section as well. Network bridging is also discussed. The next section expands the TCP/IP networking concepts of the LAN to the Internet. The Internet Connection Firewall and Internet Connection Sharing are discussed in great detail, from operation details and best practices to step-by-step configuration instructions. In addition, this book provides information on wireless networking, including new features in Windows XP, such as Universal Plug and Play support and the configuration of wireless networking. Later chapters cover security, from general information and a basic overview of network security to specific recommendations and best practices for networks with Windows XP computers. Chapters on system hardening, access control, authentication, authorization, and virtual private networking are included. While access to the Internet is widely available, not every user has 24/7 highspeed access. This book presents information about other networking services available to mobile or remote users, including dial-up networking and remote access services. In addition, coverage of IP telephony and Quality of Service is provided to assist the administrator when making decisions about how to take advantage of the built-in capabilities of Windows XP in these areas. And last but not least the appendix presents information about network diagnostics, remote assistance, utilities, service packs, and command line tools to help the administrator troubleshoot networking problems and quickly restore service to their end users. How To Use This Book Administrators with less experience will find it helpful to read the chapters in sequential order. Each chapter builds on the information in the preceding chapter to provide a total picture. More experienced administrators might prefer to use the table of contents and index to target the specific topics that interest them. Alternatively, administrators may want to approach this book by scanning the chapters to get an overview of what each one covers and then go back to chapters of interest for a more detailed look. The appendix is designed as a reference tool, and is meant to be scanned in exactly this manner.
