Since 1990, the understanding of our solar system has changed fundamentally. Recent discoveries have uncovered a whole new class of objects among our planets, as well as the existence and details of planetary systems around other stars.
This knowledge grants us new perspectives on how our solar system is structured and where it stands within its larger astronomical setting. This course explores the development of our knowledge of the solar system from the simple pondering of the motions in the sky to the latest discoveries of modern astrophysics.
Our ideas about the movements of the Sun, Moon, stars, and planets have expanded as astronomers moved from human-eye examination to telescope observations to space-age exploration. Astronomy provides diverse opportunities for stunning imagery seen from ground-based observatories, space telescopes, and satellite missions to other planets.
Every time we uncover new knowledge about our solar system, our viewpoint of how we see the heavens
